Yes! We Treat Children!

Children are one of my favorite parts of dental practice. They keep us young! After over 30 years of practice and 6 children of my own (5 boys, 1 girl) and two grandsons, a granddaughter “in the oven”, as well as the families of our dental team, I know we enjoy and can handle most children in a dental situation. They simply require a lot of love and attention.

Our technique is involves lots of communication and explanation with very light sedation and local anesthesia as needed. With the use of air abrasion technology (“no shot, no drill”), most cavities can be filled with NO anesthesia. In this case, a fine stream of powder cleans out the decay instead of a drill.

Very rarely children need heavy sedation or treatment under general anesthesia in a hospital. None of my children ever needed that and it should be reserved as a last option. The added risks and expense are considerable.

When To See Them?

Children should be brought in for their first visit no later than their second birthday, and sooner is better. I prefer to see them around 6 months of age even if it is only for a quick checkup. This introduces them to us in a non-threatening way and really aides in our being able to work with them in later years.
